The Baltic Way to Freedom. Non-violent struggle of the Baltic States in a global context
The period of the Awakening allowed the three Baltic republics of the Soviet Union to regain their independence. A wide-ranging group of authors from Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and other countries ensures a more complete view of events at that time, not only from the perspective of the three republics, but also from the perspective of the international community. The non-violent independence battle of the Baltic States is important in understanding the events of the world at that time and now. Experience with the “singing revolution” shows that peoples can achieve independence in a non-violent and peaceful way. This collection of papers is the work of the Latvian Intelligentsia Association and the Zelta Grauds publishing house. The collection includes original papers, interviews, transcripts of roundtable discussions, and papers delivered at the international “Baltic Freedom Way” conference which took place in Rīga in March 2005. The book has been published in commemoration of the 15th anniversary of Latvia’s declaration of independence. The collection includes many photographs from the period of the Renaissance, as well as information about the various authors whose work appears here.
